A reading log will be provided to you as you select from a library of books that will be provided. For TOEFL 100+ students, your goal will be to read at 150 WPM. For TOEFL 80+ students, your goal will be to read at 100WPM.
Part of your speaking / listening homework will include reading-aloud, focusing on muscle movement to formulate words and exercising the correct pitch and tone of your English words.
For lower level students, you will start off with Chinese-English definitions. As you advance, you will move into English-English definitions, using simpler English words to describe new English words.
As part of your writing lesson you will enhance your typing speed. This also requires the ability to read fast and type correctly. The typing exercises will simultaneously benefit your spelling and reading speed.
You will be taught a strategy specific to your goals. Those aiming for 80 will be equipped with a certain strategy while those aiming for TOEFL 100+ will use a different strategy for identifying important information as well as note-taking.
The Perfect 30 course is designed to enhance your reading as a byproduct of the Listening / Speaking / Writing sections. You will indeed have vocabulary to glance over, but our emphasis will not be on vocabulary. Instead, you’ll find yourself with speed reading lessons as well as reading comprehension lessons. You will spend no more than 2 hours of class-time going over note-taking strategies for the reading prep. Yes, even the reading section will have notes although very minimal.
During class you will learn to imitate the tones and pitches of Americans. As you slowly get used to formulating American-style pronunciation and committing them to muscle-memory, your speaking will slowly but surely improve.
You will listen to the TPO conversation recordings and simultaneously read-aloud the transcripts, making sure to formulate the same pitch and tone that the speakers use.
You will listen for comprehension. After learning in class various techniques to detect mannerisms, you will quickly summarize the listening sessions, from broad to detailed.
You will listen to the TPO lecture recordings and simultaneously read-aloud the transcripts, making sure to formulate the same pitch and tone that the speakers use.
Outside of class, you will learn the limited vocabulary of all various categories of classes. During class, you will undergo a mini-lecture series to supplement your subject-vocabulary lessons.
After your mini-lecture series, you will begin to listen for comprehension in TPO lectures. You will provide simple summaries the listening sessions, from broad to detailed.
You will be assigned Ted Talks videos with captions to combine your audio, visual, and reading skills.
You will be assigned NPR audios with captions to combine your audio and reading skills.
The Perfect 30 Prep will involve the activation of multiple stimuli: hearing, seeing, and reading. You will have an opportunity to imitate native speakers as you work to understand the role of tones and pitches in American English. You will begin to absorb subject-matter expertise through mini-lecture series on various topics. You will also connect the dots between what you see on video, what you hear on audio, and what you read on the captions/transcripts through Ted Talks and NPR streams.
During class you will learn American vernacular. You will become well-versed with Americanisms, American 成语, and American slang. This will increase the impression that you have close to a native-speaking ability and thus take you into the upper-echelon of speaking scores.
American English requires the use of pronunciations and enunciations that differ from Chinese. Many sounds are unable to be produced in the same way. You will begin to learn how to pronounce words correctly, decreasing the chance the 托福考官 docks points for unintelligible responses and increasing the chance to raise your score from the feeling of nativeness.
Through your integrated Speaking / Listening exercises, you will begin to exercise and develop your mental and physical response to speaking English out loud.
You will learn how to 对付考官 and 说服考官 that your English ability warrants a 4 (full score). You will learn how to fix the most common mistakes Chinese test-takers make as well as strategies for answering specific questions.
You will learn how to take notes and quickly plan out your response. TOEFL 80+ students will learn how to use some specific phrases 模版. TOEFL 100+ students will learn how to speak freely, openly and naturally 非模版.
The Perfect 30 Prep involves continued practice of pronunciation, fluidity and 地道性. We will get your 口语 skills to match your reading skills. Anything you read, you can certainly read out loud. Anything you can read out loud, you can certainly say out loud. You will also leave knowing precisely how to overcome any nervousness or 障碍 on the speaking section. You’ll also learn the real 托福考官到底重视什么.
Why typing, you ask? Many students arrive with an average typing speed of 20WPM. In a 400 word 独立写作, this requires 20 minutes dedicated simply to typing. This leaves almost no time for sentence optimization, spelling corrections, or word choice improvement. Increasing this to 40WPM will instantly save you 10 minutes of typing time. Typing will also enhance a student’s reading speed as they scan for words, spelling ability as they become cognizant of incorrectly spelled words, and of course, allow students to save crucial minutes that can be used to earn an extra 1, 2, or 3 points on the TOEFL writing. Compare this to Ronny 老师 who types an average of 138 words per minute. At that speed, one can theoretically finish an entire 400 word essay in 2.5 minutes.
Your ten finger typing exercises will occur outside of class as you either learn or reinforce the use of all ten fingers to type. Every finger has a specific key. Do not make your own simply because you think one specific key feels uncomfortable!
Once you’ve mastered ten finger typing (otherwise known as touch typing), you will start committing these into muscle memory–much like learning the piano. Typing will become second nature.
You will do three one-minute typing tests each day. You will track these in your RonnyEdu log, and with luck, you’ll see a progressive improvement over time.
You will learn all the ins and outs of proper American punctuation and grammar. This extensive lesson is a pre-cursor both to TOEFL writing as well as the SAT EBW (文法). After these lessons, you’ll leave with far more grammar knowhow than the typical American.
As you progress in your TOEFL lessons, you’ll be exposed to multiple stimuli. You’ll often see incorrect methods of writing and 造成不好的习惯. You will learn what’s appropriate for an academic (TOEFL) essay, what’s appropriate when typing casually over WeChat, and what’s appropriate when dialoguing with others.
You will learn the most optimal method of organizing and developing the integrated writing. You’ll learn specific discourse markers and synonyms to use in the integrated writing. Before long, you’ll find that the integrated writing is easier than you originally thought!
You will learn the most effective method of producing content. The biggest obstacle to students is figuring out what to say. 这样不行! You’ll learn how to write a thesis and conclusion, structure your sentences, vary your words, integrate your newly minted grammar skills, and write like a pro!
All of your foundational exposure to reading and vocabulary will culminate in a relatively quicker road to success on the TOEFL writing. As part of the Perfect 30 system, you will simultaneously augment your writing ability with increased typing speed, better grammar usage, and more effective sensing of readability. You will learn 托福写作考官到底重视什么因素?在哪一个点会把你的 5 (30) 拉到 4 (24)?You will also learn 如何对付托福电脑考官和电脑考官的算法. You will learn the most effective method to apportion your time, making sure your time is spent on high-scoring factors rather than low point-value factors. Coming out of these lessons, you will be a much more advanced writer, knowing various sentence structures and sounding more academic and hence more mature in your writing.
